Age: Mid 19th century
Material: Fully hand-embroidered silk, using Lakai Cross-stich method, with silk lining.
Origin and History: “Western Armenia” which refers to eastern parts of Turkey; After being conquered by the Ottomans in the 16th century, the area was then conquered by the Russian Empire and the Armenian population was affected during the widespread massacres of Armenians in the 1890s. The Armenians living in their ancestral lands were exterminated, or deported during the 1915 Armenian genocide. The systematic destruction of Armenian heritage, what is an example of cultural genocide, for over 4000 years destroyed many artisan, traditional textiles, like this “Arakhchin”. Which is why this piece is so rare and valuable.
